Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2 to stream on Netflix after mixed box-office response

Kamal Haasan’s much-anticipated film “Indian 2” is set to premiere on Netflix on August 9, 2024. The film, directed by Shankar, is a sequel to the iconic 1996 vigilante drama “Indian,” and features a star-studded cast including Siddharth, Rakul Preet Singh, and Bobby Simha.

Following its theatrical release on July 12, the film received mixed reviews and struggled at the box office, grossing approximately Rs 150 crore globally, which was below expectations.

The OTT rights for “Indian 2” were acquired by Netflix for a substantial Rs 200 crore, marking a significant deal for a Tamil film. The movie will be available for streaming in multiple languages: Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada. Despite the initial excitement surrounding its release, the film faced criticism, leading to a decline in audience interest shortly after its debut.

Fans have expressed eagerness for the film’s digital release, hoping it will fare better in the streaming arena than it did in theaters. The production team had initially considered an early OTT release due to dwindling box office performance, but opted to wait until the official streaming date to avoid complications for the upcoming sequel, “Indian 3.”

As the release date approaches, discussions about the film’s Hindi version continue, with no official announcement yet made regarding its availability. “Indian 2” is expected to attract a wider audience on Netflix, potentially revitalizing interest in the franchise.
